As entrepreneurs, even when there's a lot going well for you and your program, there's always an area bugging you. Something's not going quite as well as you want. For Dominic, that area is membership engagement.
How can you improve your membership engagement? How can you help your members to be completely engaged in their own success?
That's the question we're tackling today! Improving — and sustaining — membership engagement is a challenge for almost every course creator.
For Dominic, his membership community, YouTubersINC, helps entrepreneurs build their business empires on and around YouTube. His program offers the tools, strategies, and insights people need to succeed in front of the camera (the "YouTube" piece) and behind the scenes (the "INC" piece). Dominic wants to double membership engagement — after a conversation with Manja, here's how he's going to get there:
 Get your participants connected to their why
Make this a fundamental part of your program. Right off the bat, help members connect deeply with their "why." Why are they here? Why did they join this program? Why do they want to grow on YouTube? Asking the question "why" at least 5 times will help people think deeper and deeper about their motivation for joining this program.
This could be part of the very first module, a sort of self-assessment questionnaire. Depending on the group size, people could even share their "why" with the rest of the group.
Don't be afraid to come back to this "why" every month or every few weeks. Help your participants refocus. Ask them if their "why" has changed, if they're still committed to this "why", and if they're currently honoring that "why."
Keeping people connected to their "why" will help boost motivation.
 Don't overwhelm your members with content
What often happens in programs is that we as course creators have too much to share. We want to prove that we have value for our learners. Besides, our journey from beginner to where we are today is so vast that we have a lot of knowledge to share.
But this is overwhelming for learners! Instead of engaging right away, our learners may feel discouraged or intimidated.
To fix this, cut down on your content! Break every milestone or achievement into smaller steps that people will find tractable.
Remember, the number one reason people leave memberships is because there's too much content.
Information fatigue and video fatigue are real. Rather than constantly bombarding your members with content, help them actually do stuff. Get them trying things, creating a YouTube account, writing up an action plan, or doing something.
Give your members directions, then offer helpful support if they get stuck along the way! This will enable your learners to be more active and find more tangible value from engaging in the membership community.
 Help participants set expectations of the program
Lastly, and this is incredibly important, help your learners set appropriate expectations for the program. If it will take 5 hours a week, tell them that! If it will take 7 hours a week, tell them!
Then help your learners evaluate their own time. Consider adding another self-assessment component asking learners about how much time they will commit, what might get in the way of this, and what strategies they will use to combat these obstacles.
By doing this, your learners will have a plan of action before they're faced with a challenge.
